Most propane heaters use a piezoelectric igniter. It’s a push-button part that makes a spark from mechanical pressure. No battery is needed. When it stops making any click or spark at all, the igniter has almost always failed. Here’s how to confirm that and fix it.

Pressing the button squeezes a small ceramic crystal inside the mechanism. That makes a brief, high-voltage spark. The spark jumps a small gap near the burner. No battery, no outlet and no warm-up time is needed. That’s part of why this ignition method suits a portable heater so well. Because it’s a purely mechanical process, it either sparks reliably or it doesn’t. There’s rarely a "weak but working" middle ground.
Step 1: Listen and Look Closely
Press the igniter in a dim room. Watch closely at the electrode near the burner. A working igniter makes an audible click and a visible spark, even a small one. If you hear a click but see no spark, the electrode is the likely problem. It’s not the button itself.
Step 2: Check for Corrosion or a Widened Gap
The electrode is a small metal tip near the burner. Corrosion or damage can widen the gap the spark has to jump. A wider gap weakens or kills the spark. Try lightly cleaning or sanding the contact points. This sometimes restores a weak spark without any part replacement.
Step 3: Check the Wire Lead Connection
