A kerosene heater that won’t light is almost always a wick, fuel or igniter issue, not a defective unit. Here’s how to work through the causes in the order they actually happen.

Cause 1: A New Wick That Hasn’t Been Primed
A brand-new wick, or a freshly installed replacement, needs to fully soak in kerosene before it will light reliably. Fill the tank, install the wick, and let it soak for the time your manual specifies. That’s commonly 30 to 60 minutes, before attempting to light it. A dry wick produces a weak or absent flame even with fuel in the tank, since the wick itself hasn’t absorbed enough fuel yet.
Cause 2: The Wrong Fuel Grade
Kerosene heaters need clear 1-K kerosene specifically. Using dyed or off-road diesel, contaminated fuel, or a lower kerosene grade can prevent reliable lighting entirely, or cause other problems even when it does light. Cause 3: A Wick That’s Too Low
Most kerosene heaters have a wick-height adjustment knob. A wick set too low won’t reach the ignition source. It also won’t draw enough fuel to sustain a flame once lit. Check your manual for the correct starting height. This is typically raised most of the way up for lighting, then adjusted down slightly once burning.

The overall lighting sequence is broadly similar across wick-style kerosene heaters, but the exact wick-height numbers, priming times and igniter mechanisms can differ meaningfully between brands and even between models from the same manufacturer. Cause 4: A Weak or Dead Igniter Battery
Many kerosene heaters use a battery-powered electric igniter rather than a match or lighter. A weak battery can produce a spark too weak to ignite the wick even though it seems to be working. Replace the batteries with fresh ones before assuming a deeper problem, since this is an easy and inexpensive first check.
Cause 5: A Charred or Hardened Wick Top
Over repeated use, the very top of a wick can develop a hardened, carbonized layer. This resists lighting even though the wick underneath is still saturated and otherwise fine. Gently trim this charred top layer, following your manual’s guidance. This often restores reliable lighting without a full wick replacement.
Cause 6: Low Fuel in the Tank
An empty or nearly empty fuel reservoir won’t keep a wick saturated no matter how well-primed it was initially. Check the fuel gauge or tank level before troubleshooting further, especially if the heater lit fine on a previous fill.

Take a moment to visually confirm the wick sits straight and evenly seated before troubleshooting further, especially right after any wick replacement.
Does the Brand of Kerosene Heater Matter for This Troubleshooting?
The core causes above — wick priming, fuel grade, wick height, igniter battery, a charred top and fuel level — apply across nearly every wick-style kerosene heater brand, since they all share the same fundamental design principles. Manual Lighting as a Backup
Most kerosene heaters can be lit manually with a match or long lighter if the electric igniter isn’t working, following your manual’s specific safety instructions for manual lighting. Does Cold Weather Affect Lighting?
Yes. Kerosene’s viscosity increases in cold temperatures, which can slow how quickly a wick draws fuel and make lighting less reliable in a genuinely cold room or garage. Bringing the heater and fuel to room temperature before attempting to light it, where practical, can help in borderline cold conditions.
A Wick That Won’t Prime No Matter How Long You Wait
If a new wick still won’t light after a full priming period, check that it’s actually submerged in the fuel reservoir and correctly seated in the wick holder, not sitting slightly above the fuel level. A wick that isn’t making contact with fuel can’t prime regardless of how long you wait.
Storing Fuel Between Heating Seasons
Kerosene left in a heater’s tank or in a storage container over an entire off-season can degrade slightly in quality, absorbing moisture or developing sediment that affects how reliably it lights the following winter. Draining and using up fuel by the end of a season, rather than carrying it over, and starting fresh the following year, avoids this as a hidden cause of a heater that "used to light fine."
A Note on Older or Secondhand Heaters
A kerosene heater bought secondhand or pulled out of long-term storage may have a wick that’s already partially degraded from age even without heavy use, along with old fuel residue that wasn’t fully drained. Starting with fresh fuel and a fresh wick on an older or unknown-history unit is a reasonable first step before assuming any other cause, since it removes two of the most common variables at once.
When a New Wick Is the Actual Answer
