Lookalike 2: A Weak or Dirty Pilot Flame
The thermocouple needs steady, direct contact with the pilot flame to make enough current. Dust or debris around the pilot can make the flame weak and unsteady. The Millivolt Test: A Clear Answer
Still not sure after checking the lookalikes above? A basic multimeter settles it. A healthy thermocouple, properly seated, makes roughly 25 to 30 millivolts in an open-circuit test while the pilot heats the tip. A reading well below that, commonly under 20 millivolts, confirms a worn thermocouple. This is true even if the pilot occasionally holds. This test isn’t needed for a clear case. But it’s the most reliable way to confirm a borderline one.
Thermocouple vs. Thermopile: Know Which One You Have
Some larger vent-free heaters use a thermopile instead of a simple thermocouple. A thermopile makes more current. It can power extra functions, like a wall thermostat.
